Author Interview: Milli Gilbert

Milli GIlbert: Bio

An eclectic writer, Milli Gilbert is a stay-at-home mom who loves to play with words almost as much as she loves to play with her kids. All of her stories involve romance, and maybe a little bit of mystery. Milli loves to write about cowboys and shifters. And smut. Don’t forget the smut. And can usually be found trying to find interesting ways to combine them. She has several short stories published, and hopes to have her first full length novel out in late Summer 2017. She just took off after one of her couples to follow them around for a few months – but don’t worry, she’ll be back. If not, you can find her on  Facebook, Google+, and Pinterest, or follow her on Twitter.

And of course, on her blog, Hairballs of Genius. She is also a regular contributor on Happy Author’s Guild.

  • What part of your writing time do you devote to marketing your book?

Uh… not anywhere near enough. Which reminds me, I need to get some advertising figured out for Hopeless Romantic, since it’s a winter story.

  • How long on average does it take you to write a book?

That depends entirely on the length of the book. And when in my writing “career” it was written. Earlier, before I joined an online writers community, I could blast through a full-length draft of about 40-50K in a couple months. But now that I take the time to actually consider my words, and revise/edit as I go a lot more, they take a lot longer – like my book, Nerdgasm, that I’m writing right now, I started in February last year. I’m not done. Only about half way. Short stories… only take a few months from concept to publication.

  • Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?

Um… No? But I’ve been told that I taught myself how to read when I was four. I still have the book. So it must have had a pretty big impact on me. I’ve always been a storyteller, though when I was little, it was to get me out of trouble, more than to entertain.

  • So, what have you written? (*Include books, novellas, short stories, poems, blogs, awards or anything of interest, professional or hobby.)

So far, I have a number of poems published, and a three-ring binder (one of the big ones for trading-card collectors – it’s like 3-4” thick) full of poetry dating back to when I was about 14 or so, and then published works, I have 3 short story adult romances, and 1 erotica (this one’s under a different name), and am working on a number of other stories, including “the Series that Got Away”. Oh, and my blogs. Hairballs of Genius, and then my smut blog. Thought I’d keep those separate, since the content is so different.

  • Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?

Oh, my… ummmm… Oh, I hate these questions. I never know. Robin Williams, I suppose, for not living, for obvious reasons – he was brilliant and tortured sooooo amazing. Alive, it would have to be… there are two, and I might as well meet them in tandem, but Tom Hiddleston because Tom Hiddleston – he’s cute, he’s sweet, and he looks like he gives the most amazing hugs. He’d have to come with Benedict Cumberbatch, because my MMC in Nerdgasm is his Doppelgänger, and I just want to hear him say the lines.

Oh Tom Hiddleston… mm.. I completely agree. Thanks for answering all my questions and good like with your writing! 🙂

  1. Great interview.
How do you manage keeping writing under a pen name for your erotica? Do you find it difficult?
As in meeting Robin Williams I’d love to meet him too. But as Mrs. Doubtfire because I loved him in that movie.

    1. As far as keeping my erotica under another pen name, it’s really not too difficult until I’m trying to tweet a promotion for a book. I was a bit of a chameleon as a kid, so flitting around a portion of all the different groups was easy. I use that to my advantage, now. I use TweetDeck to keep track of everything, and on 1/1, a friend and I released a co-written short story (we’re working up to writing a full-length novel together soon-ish) that I keep trying to tweet about as Milli, so I keep having to delete the tweet & then I forget the hashtags, so I have to delete again because Twitter doesn’t allow editing a tweet. That’s probably the hardest part about keeping “us” separate. Otherwise, it’s been pretty easy.

  2. What a fun interview! I love seeing women who have kids and still get published! I’m getting ready to start IVF and am scared of being overwhelmed with kids and not getting any work done. You give me hope! Good luck with your winter book!

    1. Thank you for your comment! Yes, it was a very inspiring conversation with Milli. Good luck with your writing, Amy! 🙂
